A few years ago a byline from Dan Rather resonated with me. I like to revisit a few paragraphs from time to time; now more than ever. “We are one nation, and yet we are made up of different states. We are bound by one Constitution, and yet we speak different languages, pray in different ways, and trace our ancestry to every corner of the globe. On issue, after issue, it seems we are more interested in digging ideological trenches than working toward a solution. Too many of us get our news mostly, if not entirely, from sources that reflect our biases rather than challenge us to think critically. And we tend to congregate in separate communities of “our own kind.” How did we get here? And how can we get back to a more united place?” Two years later we seem to have moved further away from e pluribus unum: from many, one.
