I've been in the business of communication design and brand development for over 40 years. Now I'm spending more time creating art; specifically graphic illustrations with the hope of jumpstarting what was an art school dream into a second career. Candidly, it's been one of the most difficult things for me transition wise. Ad campaign development was always a group effort. You basically lived and died by the concept in a collaboration between team members and eventually the client. IT was business and rarely personal. Now I'm putting myself out there.

Over the last few years, I've been looking for ways to rekindle my passion for a specific art-style I created as a young art director and apply it to present a strong concept making the viewer happy, intrigued, outraged, or even a little bit sad. This of course is wrapped around the job of getting my name out there and of course, using what I know as a marketing communications professional to establish my own brand.
So how does this all work?
Here are a few tips on how to stoke that creative fire and overcome some doubts and fears in getting my brand established:
1. Find Inspiration I found inspiration when I recalled what I loved to do as a young adult.
2. Go Back to Basics Start to see your art through the eyes of when you were just developing your skills. Take small creative action every day. Allow your imagination to roam free. drawing what you observe and find that space to tell a story.
3. Find Your Tribe For me it was immersing myself in not-for-profit projects. This absolutely jumpstarted my passion for art. I became a partner in a company that specializes in bringing not-for-profit groups together with local musicians, artists, theatre for fundraising. It's good to surround yourself with like-minded people.
4. Make PR Your New Best Friend Approaching your art business from a marketing perspective means always looking at your personal marketing campaign from a holistic viewpoint. Personal marketing doesn’t just mean developing a brochure and mailing it. Start thinking in terms of a marketer and acting accordingly, and public relations should definitely be part of your overall marketing mix. And when you take a closer look, why wouldn’t it be? It’s almost free!
Public relations is a powerful and virtually free method of building name recognition and credibility in your market.
